Advantages and disadvantages of AAC

      Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) - is a reliable time-tested material. During its history (more than eighty years), it has been used in almost all types of structural elements of buildings for various purposes. This material is used for load-bearing walls and non-bearing partitions, for the production of reinforced slabs, and as the insulating layer.

     When it comes to building a house, AAC stood a long time in the shadow of a brick, but views have changed in recent years.

    AAC is widely used as a building material. It is currently producing more than 240 factories in 50 countries, the total capacity of approximately 60 million cubic meters of autoclaved aerated concrete.

    Autoclaved aerated concrete is obtained from a mixture of sand, cement, lime, gypsum, water and a blowing agent. Last one gives to ACC the porous structure to which the air is turned into millions of tiny pores that are evenly distributed, so it is considered the easiest masonry material that can
be easily polished and cut to size, using the circular saw or hand saw.

Cellular concrete blocks advantages:

  • low volumetric weight;
  • very good mechanical resistance to compression, tensile and bending;
  • thermal and sound insulating capabilities;
  • it has a very good fire resistance;
  • resistance to water penetration;
  • it prevents the spread of fire;
  • it contains a large number of isolated tiny air pores, which gives the material a low density and light weight;
  • maintains for a long time mechanical properties;
  • walls made of AAC brick "breathes", so the house does not have condensation problems;
  • there is no need for additional insulation;
  • the execution time for construction is lower than using conventional bricks.

Disadvantages of autoclaved aerated concrete blocks:

  • produced in standard sizes, they must be cut and modeled to the needs of construction, this can result in loss of material;
  • aerated concrete blocks mounted only with a special mortar, which must be applied in certain conditions of temperature and humidity;
  • aerated concrete blocks should it requires the construction of monolithic frame for seismic areas;
  • the building made of ACC blocks it is necessary to plaster. Unplastered blocks quickly lose their insulating capacity due to the accumulation of water in the surface layers of its structure.
